Success Of A Mathematics Career - 992 Words

Success in a mathematics career is determined by a number of factors such as motivation, encouragement, hard work, and skill. The people we network with and people that educate us contribute to these factors. As the amount women completing their college careers continue to increase, we are still a minority in STEM fields, particularly mathematics. This has been proven first hand as I have yet to have a female mathematics professor at the University I attend. Thus I reached out to Dr. Sarah Reznikoff who eagerly agreed to answer all of my questions and be my inspiring female role model. Dr. Sarah Reznikoff grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. Growing up, Dr. Reznikoff had good teachers in high school that encouraged her in math. Dr. Reznikoff enjoyed mathematics because she was good at it. In school, being good in her math classes helped her think math is something she should continue to do. Not a bad idea to go off of since usually, when you are good at something, it aids in understanding and inspires one to continue to learn more. Along with math, Dr. Reznikoff loved her English classes and writing. But ultimately, she chose math because mathematics has a certainty factor. When the solution is right, it is right, whereas writing has more subjectivity. For the past 8 years, Dr. Reznikoff has been an assistant professor at Kansas State University. She received her PH.D. in 2002 from the University of California at Berkley.
